Sleep is crucial for various aspects of physical and mental well-being. We regularly recommend prioritizing sleep for several reasons, but the main one being related to the muskulosckeletal system that we as chiropractors are constantly supporting. During sleep, the body undergoes processes of repair and restoration; tissues are repaired, muscles are rebuilt, and growth hormones are released. Sleep is not only essential for physical health, restoration, and healing but also for cognitive/memory/mental health, hormone regulation, metabolic health, and immune system support.

Here are a few ideas to help you prioritize your sleep:

Consistent Sleep Schedule
Yes, establish a bed time. Having a routine will help regulate your body’s internal clock and improves your sleep quality.

Limit Screen Time Reduce your exposure to screensat least one hour before bed. Screens emite blue light that interfere with melatonin production, making it more difficult to fall asleep.

Regular Exercise Engage in regular physical activity, but try completing your intense workouts a few hours before bed. Exercise promotes better sleep, but sometimes has the opposite effect if done too close to bedtime.

Manage Stress Practice stress management techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or progressive muscle relaxation. This may also help you get yourself into a more relaxed state before you try to sleep.

Seek Natural Light Exposure Getting exposure to natural light, especially in the morning (within 10 mins of waking) helps regulate your body’s internal clock and natural become sleepy when it’s time.

Hydrate Mindfully
Be sure you’re hydrating properly during the day so that late night thirst doesn’t have you waking up to use the bathroom while you’re support to be sleeping.

Get Adjusted
Getting regularly scheduled chiropractic care can contribute to improved sleep through several mechanisms including pain reduction, stress reduction, and enhanced circulation!
